Plumbing tips while you wait
Shut off the water
Most fixtures have a small valve underneath. For bigger leaks, close the main shut-off where the water line enters the house.
Go easy on drain cleaners
Chemical cleaners can damage older pipes and make the job harder for a plumber. A plunger or a cheap drain snake is safer.
Water heater warning signs
Rusty water, popping noises or water pooling at the base usually mean the tank is near the end of its life.
Ask about pricing up front
Ask whether there is a trip or diagnostic fee and whether after-hours rates apply before the plumber comes out.
Renters: tell your landlord
If you rent, repairs are usually the landlord's responsibility. Let them know right away.
